Sahayak has been blessed with many inspirations on his flute journey. From first hearing the meditative Xiao bamboo flute high in the sacred mountains of western China, to the haunting sounds of the Native American Indian flutes after running across Apache lands in the US, to the sliding notes of the Indian bansuri flutes, played by his Indian spiritual Master, Sahayak’s flute playing has been influenced and inspired by a variety of cultures, traditions and experiences.
Performing solo and with his partner Maia in the Sacred music duo 'samjjana' (both live and CD recordings), and at times in collaboration with other musicians in concerts in Australia and overseas, Sahayak’s passion, experience and distinctive style of playing and his spontaneous and intuitive musical expression captures the hearts of audiences. Whether playing gently or powerfully, Sahayak has developed a unique combination of fingering and breathing techniques.
Flutes have their own ‘voice’ - each requires a particular style of playing and breath control, yet it is the musicians who bring their ‘voice’ to the fullest through their own creative awareness, breath and oneness with the flutes.
To assist others in developing technique and their own style of playing, Sahayak is available to teach those who wish to learn how to play wooden flutes or rekindle their passion for playing. Whether an individual or a group, Sahayak will enthusiastically pass on his experiences so that you, too, can play with creative freedom and confidently develop your musicality.
Individual instruction gives an understanding of the care of flutes, their history, playing techniques, breath control and fingering exercises. Please note – you do not have to have played before, or be able to read music, or understand music theory to play wooden flutes.
All Sahayak asks is that you come with a smile, plenty of enthusiasm and an open heart, and with your own flute. If you don’t have your own, Sahayak can recommend some flute makers and importers.
An hour's tuition is $40 for an individual. Groups of three or more attract a discounted price. Beginners usually require two hours of tuition (best spaced over two sessions, one or two weeks apart). Sahayak is based at Belli Park, 15 mins west of Eumundi on the Sunshine Coast (other locations can be discussed).
Inquiries please contact Sahayak - mobile 0435 447 693 or email via our contact form.
(Sahayak and Maia also offer ‘Musical Alchemy Workshops’. These creative sessions of self-expression through musical exploration are for those who have limited experience or those who have the perception that they have no musical ability. It offers the freedom and joy of spontaneously playing a variety of instruments that lend themselves to intuitive, improvised playing in a supportive and non-judgemental environment without any rules, structure or attachment to outcomes. It could be at one of these workshops that you discover an instrument that becomes the vehicle for your creative passion.)
